1. Aging Reversed in Mice
Scientists from the United States and Australia have teamed together and successfully reversed the aging process in mice. Utilizing a certain compound, researchers were able to tone muscles, reduce inflammation, provide more energy, and improve insulin resistance. Let’s be clear, we’re not talking about slowing aging down, but curing the disease altogether. This is the equivalent of making a 60yr old, 20 again! The question of “can we do it?” has been answered, but perhaps a better question is: Are we ready for immortality? Human trials may begin as soon as next year!
2. A Machine that Analyzes Your Facebook Photos
Most of us are already aware that Facebook advertisements are targeted by keywords, phrases in our posts, or by how many “likes” we give to a person or website. Yet, imagine if Facebook could analyze your photos too: suddenly, they know what brand of clothes you normally wear, your alcoholic drink of choice, your favorite hangout spots, and the list goes on. Though privacy advocates might strongly protest, in the world of marketing this type of personalized advertising is ingenious; and will all be made possible through the use of AI.
3. Personal Drones Are Getting Better
Our government makes use of them; Amazon certainly means to as well, thus you may have been thinking, maybe I should get my hands on one too? Well thanks to a handful of dealers, you can now own the DJI Phantom 2 Vision Drone for a little over a grand complete with an easy to use remote control, a 14-megapixel camera, and a Wi-Fi link for better control and visibility. This will no doubt be the first of many high-tech personal drones yet to come, but for quadricopter fans this might just be the “must have” for Christmas.
4. DIY High School Team Creates Robotic Hand for Little Girl
Preschooler Harmony Taylor was given a remarkable Christmas gift from the West Catholic High School Robotics Team: a new hand. Four year-old Taylor was born without fingers on her right hand due to a condition called “limb differences”. However, thanks to her teacher and a team of young roboticists, her new mechanical attachment responds directly to her hand movements, allowing her to move her new fingers easily. Taylor was very excited at the idea of tying her shoes, waving goodbye, and best of all, painting her nails pink!
5. “Transcendence” – The Movie
Starring Johnny Depp and Morgan Freeman, this could be a motion picture that many transhumanists have been waiting for to spread the word about technological singularity. In other words, this film centers on the idea of artificial intelligence surpassing human intelligence and capabilities; thus changing civilization as we know it, and perhaps altering the human race altogether. Whether or not this future will indeed come to pass, the movie itself promises to be a heavily anticipated sci-fi thriller with an all-star cast.
