Evacuated Tube Transport also known as Hyperloop transportation uses airless vacuum tubes system with a magnetic levitation system similar to high-speed bullet trains. Each tube will carry individual capsules systems that will fit up to six people per capsule. Theoretically the system could travel at speeds up to 4000 miles per hour. Passengers could travel from LA to NY in an astonishing 45 minutes and NY to China in just under 2 hours.

This may sound like a far-future project but a colorado-based company called ET3 is working on a 3 mile prototype that should be ready by the end of 2013. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a fan of the idea and refers to this technology as a “cross between a Concorde, a railgun, and an air hockey table” We just hope Musk gets involved asap. His future forward thinking and his finical support could kickstart this project faster than anyone could imagine.

In 1972, a paper written by physicist R.M Salter described a tube system known as the Very High Speed Transit System (VHST). Salter concluded, “The general principles are fairly straightforward: electromagnetically levitated and propelled cars in an evacuated tunnel.”
Another company looking to innovate the transportation industry is Terraspan. According to there website:
“Terraspan trains are a kilometer long and 50m wide, with separate passenger and freight levels. Travelling in a vacuum tunnel on a mag-lev track the enormous trains will run in a virtually friction free environment, minimizing the energy required. No obstacles or friction mean the trains can travel at very high speeds of thousands of km/hr similar to and even exceeding the speed of the Concorde jet. The long distance routes planned mean the train can achieve very high speeds with rates of acceleration comfortable for passengers and mitigated by gimballed passenger compartments.”

Commuting in the near future will include traveling ultra fast from coast to coast on a daily basis. Imagine having a home in San Francisco and working in NYC or living on a farm in Kansas and working in LA. In the year 2045 no one will want to waste six hours in fight time from NY to LA. Travel today is an inefficient waste of time and the time to innovate the transportation industry is now. Human consciousness is directly connected to our relationship with space-time. As our consciousness grows and expands so will our relationship with travel. We want our bodies to move as fast as our information. I just hope Elon Musk is secretly working on teleportation. Forget more legroom on airplanes, beam me up.
Elon Musk will reveal his Hyperloop concept tomorrow! Check back here for details.
