Or maybe you have privacy concerns in light of the recent NSA scandal? If that’s the case, you can always just create your own private internet! Or at least that is what one community in Athens, Greece chose to do in rebellion against their expensive and unreliable internet service. Citizens created what is known as “Athens Wireless Metropolitan Network” and is currently providing service to over 1,000 members via wireless rooftop antennas. The service is complete with a built –in search engine and community classifieds, in addition to being nearly 30 times faster than the available telecom internet.
Many of these “off the grid” internet services began for those who are outside of traditional service areas; however, as you can see they have slowly developed into much more. Others have started developing such rogue provider services due in part to the governmental shutdowns during protests, such as in Egypt or the Middle East. As Greek user Joseph Bonicioli says, “When you run your own network, nobody can shut it down.” Because they are beyond the reach of intelligence agencies and often significantly lower in cost, these private internet “meshes” may indeed become more prevalent in today’s world. So the question becomes, how much will you put up with before you simply decide to create your own internet?
