“We have domesticated ourselves. Our teeth continue to shrink (because of cooking, our external stomach), our muscles thin out, our hair disappears. As fast as we remake our tools, we remake ourselves. We are co-evolving with our technology, and so we have become deeply dependent on it. If all technology — every last knife and spear — were to be removed from this planet, our species would not last more than a few months. We are now symbiotic with technology.”- Kevin Kelly
We domesticate animals in different ways for different purposes and each uses a different technique; the whip, cattle prod, chains, cages and so on. Domestication is a process of utility to extract a function.
We are as much animals as anything we domesticate. So what leashes us? It seems language is the leash leading the animal down the path. Language binds dendritic pathways in the brain. For instance, take religion; it is a combination of words constructed in a certain way that causes a primate to [easyazon-link asin=”B00AIF6L4G” locale=”us”]behave[/easyazon-link] and act a certain way.
The language we use (or that uses us) dictates our actions.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
We are god, in a sense, as we are a product of the word.
“We have domesticated our humanity as much as we have domesticated our horses.-Kevin Kelly”
If one resonates as the horse, the halter is suppressing and options are limited. If one resonate as the rider, mobility and options become [easyazon-link asin=”1451614217″ locale=”us”]abundant[/easyazon-link]. This leads us back to how I feel as If we are technological linguistic beings, currently in a biological primate substrates.
Next week, I will be diving deeper into this subject and furthering ideas laid out by Kevin Kelly with his concept of the Technium as the 7th kingdom of life.
